The Incredible Journey of Colombian Film ‘The Red Tree’

In a road movie, also called a road movie, the plot travels between roads and with characters who reveal what unites them or separates them. It can be a lonely journey with a path armed with reflections. Give way to the experiences of a group of people who build intrigue and sow complicated or tender relationships while following a route and taking a complex path to a new life.

The Colombian film The Red Tree could be placed in the second description: it is a story marked by misunderstandings, surprises and a delicate point of tension, based on an unexpected journey and a little taste of the Colombian Caribbean.

Eliécer (Carlos Vergara), a retired musician, learns that he has a younger half-sister. and, after her father’s death, he must take the girl to Bogotá with her mother.

But the meeting is not easy at all since the protagonist has a deep conflict with his family, lives alone and seems to follow a routine that helps him escape memories. Esperanza (and Shaday Velásquez) is the name of the little girl who comes to turn Eliécer’s life upside down.

She speaks little, her gaze is deep and she only has a bagpiper who no longer wants to play.

Reluctantly, Eliécer embarks on a journey to take the little girl to Bogotá. He has no money and decides to take Toño (Jhoyner Salgado), a teenager who, after pinning his hopes on a career as a boxer, keeps a precious treasure and feels he can earn a few pesos in the capital. .

The setting for the trip is set: lonely roads, almost ghost towns where armed groups are in control, but, on the contrary, the strength of solidarity is also felt, at a time (the 90s) when there is a lot of tension in the country.
During their trip, Eliécer, Toño and Esperanza don’t have a good time, but when everything seems to be falling apart, they get help from someone who won’t let them go astray.

Little by little, the protagonists destroy these invisible walls that have the power to hide their emotions and, while they continue on the road to see the landscape, the film shows their intentions: it is a tribute to friendship and the family, even if it is broken, is dysfunctional or has been forged by something unexpected.

Likewise, it is a film that depicts the idiosyncrasy of the inhabitants of the Caribbean with joy, strength and their ability to solve day to day.

everything comes togetherto the sounds of a bagpipe that is heard again, almost like a balm for the most intense moments that the story offersand gives way to a melody that realizes that things can change for these travelers.

The on-screen chemistry that the protagonists achieve is very striking, to forge a bond and a camaraderie that evolves little by little, but which totally serves the story.

The Red Tree is a simple film and at first sight without many surprises. But he handles moments of joy very well and doesn’t overdo it or emotionally manipulate.

Eliécer’s badass image, Toño’s volatility and fragility, Esperanza’s strength and tenderness work wonders in this film, which should be released in theaters in the second half and which has also had its own journey. , yes, beyond Rincón del Viento (where Eliécer lives) or Bogotá.
