The growing interest in the industry motorhomes and motorhomes is appreciated in rental figures. More than 90% of the vehicles (about 5,000 in total) are already reserved for these days, and the association of distributors and manufacturers Aseicar calculates that other 160,000 private vehicles will be on the road these days.
With an average of three occupants per motorhome, there will be more than 500,000 people take advantage of itinerant tourism in Spain. And this despite rising fuel prices. For this reason, according to Aseicar, a good part of the camper vans preferred to do closer journeys and fewer days. All of them, before starting, must take into account several aspects.
Before leaving, you should plan the trip carefully, especially if you have no experience. Getting started with a motorhome It drives slower than in a car. And even if this type of tourism allows more improvisation, it is know the night areas or the campsites along the route. Also the spaces allow emptying and filling with water, if necessary.
What driving license do I need?
If the vehicle has a maximum authorized mass of 3,500 kg or less (which corresponds to 95% of the models, according to the association of distributors and manufacturers Aseicar), you can drive with the car license B.
The maximum speed is the same as for passenger cars: 120 km/h on motorways and expressways and 90 km/h on conventional roads. If the model exceeds 3,500 kilos, the C1 license is required and the limits drop to 90 km/h and 80 km/h respectively.
The board falls under its own weight, but all occupants must travel seated and seat belts fastened. Motorhomes are approved to house a certain number of passengers on the journey, this does not have to coincide with the number of places to spend the night. The data can be found in the vehicle data sheet.
As a general recommendation, Aseicar recommends spend the night “in spaces adapted to this practice”, that is to say in the night areas for motorhomes and campsites. However, as explained later, the regulations do not prevent sleeping anywhere the vehicle is properly parked.
Clear, gray and black waters
It is essential to correctly calculate the amount of water needed. According to experts, with rational use it is enough with a maximum of 15 liters per person per day. If the motorhome is for rent, the companies offer the necessary instructions. If the gray water (waste water from the shower, tap or dishwasher) and black water (stool) tanks are full, They can only be emptied at the places indicated.
Aseicar collects the Basic tips for getting around in rural areas or small towns: “Parking without obstructing traffic and without deploying safety accessories camping, favor local trade and act with good neighbours”. Caravan associations offer the same recommendation, as users of these vehicles are still considered in many places land invaders: the objective of the sector is to achieve a good coexistence.
To avoid any confusion, Aseicar recalls that it is considered that a motorhome is parked (and not when camping) when “it only touches the ground with its wheels (except on a slope, where chocks will be justified)” and “does not occupy more space than that of the motorhome”, without roll down the windows or “invading the space with chairs, tables or awnings”. They must also not emit fluids or “cause annoying noises”.
In Spain there are no specific regulations on RV parking, but some municipal mobility ordinances prohibit RV parking. They contravene the General Traffic Regulations, and this is specified by DGT instruction 08/V-74, published in 2008.
It establishes that they can “perform the stopping and parking maneuvers under the same conditions and with the same limitations as any other vehicle”. And we add that if a motorhome is well parked, “the fact that its occupants are inside is irrelevant”.
leaving no trace
Once you’ve overcome the parking and camping issues, Aseicar’s next tip is take care of the environment and the good image of the sector. The good motorhome, specifies the association, “does not throw plastic, cans, cigarettes or paper on the ground”. And he adds that he “never does polluting actions like the emptying of waste water in unsuitable places.
